The ROI of IT Training

Business success happens because your employees are trained, knowledgeable and willing to satisfy customer needs, better than alternatives the customer may have. Information Technology employees rarely have direct interaction with customers, but it is still possible to estimate a return to the business. If there were no reason to have computers or IT staff, no business would have them! Obviously, there is a business need for IT, and therefore, a better-trained and more knowledgeable IT staff can serve your business and your customers better.

What is the return to your business if you invest in your IT employees to make them more productive and more knowledgeable? This is a question that is not easy to find concrete answers for. By breaking the question down, it becomes easier to put numbers to each piece, so that an answer can be found. This document illustrates how each piece can be broken down, using a short version of the knowledge and skills taught in the Windows XP portion of the Microsoft Windows 2000/2003 Administration, Design and Security class. The table includes topical areas, but not the detail within each topic. These topics are related to benefits to the company.

Our Certified Trainers will work with your IT staff to determine their training needs, then score the results. This will result in a list of benefits the company may achieve through training. On request, our trainers will work with the company CFO, or other decision maker to translate the benefits to resulting dollars to the company. We know from experience the results will far outweigh the cost of training to the company. We’d like to show you the savings.

Here are some additional questions to consider:

  • How much time do your employees spend waiting to gain access to information and documents they need to work?
  • How much time do employees spend doing unproductive things on their computers?
    • Changing the computer background
    • Trying to gain access to information they should not access.
    • Looking for files they misplaced
    • Playing games on the computer
  • Do your employees spend time using the internet for inappropriate purposes?
    • Purchasing personal items online
    • Using the internet for personal search
    • Accessing inappropriate websites
  • Does your business have mobile employees or telecommuters?
    • Do they have access to the information they need while out of the facilities?
    • Do they have web access to needed information?
    • Do they have dial-up access to needed information?
  • What happened the last time the power was out at your business?
  • Is your information secure?
  • How do you know?
  • What is the cost of a security breech?
  • What is the probability of incurring legal fees because of customer information or personnel information being compromised?
  • How much time does your IT staff currently spend researching, to find solutions for current situations or possible future scenarios?
